"Dr. Mauro Takes On ABC TV"

This is Suzanne. I'm sitting here, by myself, in Dr. Mauro's Naturopathic Clinic. He just hired me as his new full-time receptionist last Wednesday. Then Saturday he flew off to Mexico.

Just before he left, he told me, "Oh yeah, send out an email introducing yourself."

Gulp!

So much for the days when a receptionist just answered phones...

Okay... I live in Tecumseh, but was born in Windsor (travelled far from home).

I'm married, with a son who just turned 21, another who is eight and a beautiful 14-year old daughter. It was a wise move spacing them out that way -- built in babysitters.

In my spare time (?) I hang out with my family but I also love to exercise... four times a week: Treadmill, weight circuit, Elliptical machine, etc.

When I showed up for work last Friday, my new boss says:

"Did you see last night's episode of 'Grey's Anatomy'?"

With his flight leaving in 24 hours, and hardly having anytime to train me, I was surprised he even brought this up. Maybe it was a test?

"I did," I replied.

"Natalia got me hooked on this show now," Dr. Mauro continued, with mounting excitement in his voice.

"It's very suspenseful," I replied.

"It's unbelievably suspenseful!" he said.

Truth is, it's actually my favourite show. I love the way it mixes the medical theme, drama, suspense and personal character stories all in under an hour.

Last Thursday's episode, where Meredith's mother tells her in that afterlife scene, "You're anything but ordinary. You need to go back." got me crying. Dr. Mauro said his wife was in tears too. Even he had to admit it choked him up (there's a soft guy under that 3rd degree black belt after all!).

But then Dr. Mauro's excitement went sour, when he remembered a previous episode where a lady with cancer was undergoing chemotherapy and the doctor's around her became very ill from her "toxic blood" as they called it.

Then one of the docs says that "they found some herbal remedies in her pocket" which caused her blood to become toxic.

These shows have a lot of influence over people and Dr. Mauro felt they were misrepresenting the case completely: "That was totally uncalled for and unethical on their part. It makes me angry! I can't help but wonder how much of that program is sponsored by pharmaceutical companies?"

Well, that got Dr. Mauro all worked up. He likes the show, but thinks they abuse their power to educate the public.

Good thing he's in Mexico now, relaxing on the beach. When he comes back, he'll be well rested and ready to take on ABC.

Well, today or tomorrow, all active patients should be receiving the February newsletter.

I'm in the clinic until Thursday. Please drop by, stock up and introduce yourself.

Stay warm,

Suzanne

Due South

Just wanted to say goodbye...

Last week my wife decided we were going on vacation. She got a nice deal on last minute tickets to a resort we like in Mexico. Heading out from Detroit tomorrow at noon.

Man, it's been a whirlwind of a week. Last-minute vacations are dangerous.

By coincidence I was just bringing in a new receptionist to the clinic. Working away today to get her up to speed, so she can run the clinic in my absence.

Plus, we had some delays with the printing shop and are just finishing up the February newsletter. My staff will stuff and mail them all by Monday. Look in your mailbox Tuesday/Wednesday for your complimentary copy (if you're an active patient).

Here's what's coming...

"It's 4 a.m. And There's A Man With A Flashlight Looking In Through Our Front Door"... pg.1

Two Little Glands That Can Save Your Life OR Deplete It... pg.2

A No-Cost Stress Reduction Prescription... pg.2

Natural Funny Bone Supplements... pg.2

Virtual Weight Lifting... pg.2

Before Marriage, After Marriage... pg.2

You Don't Want Last Night's Dinner Hanging Around In Your Gut... pg.3

All right, I'm heading south. Wish me a safe flight. I'll bring back some pictures. If you need any supplements (check out the newsletter for a special discount coupon on Multi B vitamins) Suzanne will be at the clinic next week, Monday through Thursday, from 10am to 5pm.

If you were thinking of booking an appointment, I'd do it now, as my schedule will most likely get backed up on my return.

Nos vamos!

Dr. Mauro and Oprah Winfrey Gave The Same Prescription

The Thursday before last, I was sitting down with a patient who is going through a lot of trouble in her life. Not just health, but otherwise. I suggested she get a copy of a film that I've been recommending to my patients for a while.

Later that day she calls the office to let me know that same film was just featured on Oprah.

For those who missed it, Oprah interviewed the creator of the movie "The Secret" -- an Australian lady by the name of Rhonda Byrne. Larry King Live also interviewed Dr. Joe Vitale about his involvement with "The Secret" movie a couple months ago.

In short, it is a documentary-style film that reveals the great "secret of life." Simply put: What you think is what you attract. They back it up with real-life examples and interviews with successful authors, speakers, writers, doctors (!) who've all consciously applied this principle in their life.

Now Oprah focused on using the secret to get out of debt, find a more fulfilling job and attract your dream mate. All noble goals, but I'd like to talk about how "The Secret" applies to improving your health...

If you've already seen the film, you know that it briefly tells the story of Morris E. Goodman, AKA "The Miracle Man."

At 35, people called Mr. Goodman, Mr. Success -- up until the accident.

He was one of the leading life insurance businessman in the world and a member of The Million Dollar Round Table.

On March 10th, 1981, all that money became useless.

That afternoon, he took off in his private airplane for a pleasure flight. He left behind a loving wife and a beautiful home.

When trying to land a few hours later, the plane crashed. The paramedics had to use a hand pump keep him breathing after the rescue team removed him from the wreckage. He was rushed to the hospital...

His entire spine was crushed. The doctors said he'd never walk again.

His diaphragm was useless. The doctors said he'd never breathe again without a respirator.

His larynx was destroyed. The doctors said he'd never speak.

His swallowing reflexes were so damaged he'd never be able to eat again.

It was rare for anyone to even survive two severe breaks to the neck. The doctor confessed to his wife, "I don't think he'll survive the night."

Morris' eyes could still blink, however. His brain was undamaged. Using an alphabet chart held in front of him, he told the doctor that he'd walk out on his own two feet, without mechanical aid, by Christmas.

All he had was his mind and the ability to imagine. He heard Zig Ziglar say once that our nervous system cannot tell the difference between imagination and reality. Morris spent his days visualizing himself the way he wanted to be...

Then one night he started to breathe on his own. The respirator was removed by an astounded physician.

A month or so later, he could move his hands. He was assigned a physiotherapist.

Then he could "control" an electric wheelchair (to the terror of other patients).

Finally he started to stand with the aid of a walker.

Nine months after the crash he walked out of the hospital on his own two feet, with no supports.

This is how "The Great Secret of Life" can be used to overcome your current health problems. It doesn't mean you should abandon treatments and remedies. Morris had help for his nine month journey. It just means you need to believe in yourself more than any given cure.

To see an inspiring trailer for The Secret movie, click here.

If you'd like to have your own copy of film, I recommend clicking this link, as it costs less for Canadians.

The DVD also includes a moving story of a woman who cured herself of breast cancer without any chemotherapy or radiation. See what route she took instead...

P.S. If you think you have mental blocks over getting well, we need to talk. I firmly believe that if the mind isn't working with us, no matter what treatments I offer you, they'll have little effect. If you'd like to sit down and discuss how you feel about your ability to get better, I'd encourage you book an appointment with me at (519) 739 2402.

We can set definite goals, definite dates and work together to achieve them. I strongly encourage you to put your goals in writing. It's one of the best ways to avoid the negative self-talk that creates a downward spiral, quickly. You need to write down and constantly visualize all the positive things that will come about by meeting your health goals. You also need to be aware of what will be the result if you do not meet your goals.

It's vital to get pumped up with enthusiasm if you want to make changes in your life. You can leverage your will power with motivation and support. If I can help, call (519) 739-2402 to book an appointment.

P.P.S. I'm heading off for an overdue vacation next week. Me, Natalia, Alek and Ella are flying south! More later...

98 Years Old And Still In Love

Received this story from Anthony M. (a patient who lives just outside of town) about his 98 year old grandfather's love for his grandmother who passed away some twenty years earlier. Seemed like a perfect tale for Valentine's Day.

First, I wanted to point out that Anthony's grandpa wasn't living in a nursing home, nor with family. He lived on his own, gardening, cooking, reading and doing pottery. Not only that, but at the age of 65, upon retiring, he took up landscape painting. Now, many might think 65 too old to start something new, but he kept it up for the next 33 years, producing hundreds of acrylics of country homes, boats and winter valleys.

Anthony told me that in the summer of 2003 his Grandpa had to be hospitalized because his kidney had failed. He would not be able to return home. Needed 24 hours care in a nursing home. Well, his Grandpa waived his arms in the air and said, "No way!" The next day, after breakfast in bed, he passed away, peacefully.

Alright, here's Anthony's story -- and if this isn't a love story, what is?...

"When my grandfather was 90 or so, he had to have a pacemaker installed. After the surgery my aunt moved in for a week or two to help out (or mainly get in the way).

"Grandpa spent most of his evenings sitting on this hundred year old couch with a quilt stretched across. His hearing was almost gone so TV and radio never interested him. Instead, he was a voracious reader, having every National Geographic since 1955, read front to cover.

"Anyways, the quilt on the couch was ragged and dirty. My aunt immediately removed it and put into storage.

"My grandfather immediately refused to sit on the couch.

"'But that thing is in rags,' protested my Aunt.

"'Doesn't matter,' said my Grandpa, 'Your mother made that, and I'm not sitting on that couch without it.'

So, after a few days, my aunt saw that he was serious. She took the quilt out of storage, gave it a good washing and then said, 'Alright, let's fix it up then.'

"Each day, for the next week, they sewed that quilt back together, patched holes, and made it look brand new. For the entire maintenance period, my Grandpa refused to sit on the couch. It wasn't until the quilt was placed back did he finally return to his favourite spot, with National Geographic in hand.

"The marvel of this, to me, is that Grandma died about 20 years earlier."

Thanks for sharing that story Anthony. Sure beats the regular Hollywood mush. Can't help but feel your grandfather's genuine passion for his wife, for his art and for life, is what kept him thriving to nearly a 100.

Enthusiasm, love and creativity would be the number one selling prescription if we could package it in a bottle.

p.s. On page 2 of my February print newsletter (which should be arriving next week in your mailbox -- if you're an active patient) I talk about the "Before Marriage, After Marriage Syndrome." In fact, just the other week a lady came into the clinic and told me, "Every since I got married, 6 years, ago, I've put on 35 extra pounds."

What a coincidence, as that was exactly what I writing about for the February newsletter...

"I don't know what it is. Some subconscious drive that tells us to look good until we've found our mate. and then says, 'You can just slack off for the rest of your life -- You're all set now!'"

So on page 4 I outline part of my personal abs workout routine that can give you an "organic" six-pack in as little as 15 minutes, three times a week. It can also relieve constipation and get rid of any sluggishness in your gut.

p.p.s. If you aren't on the mailing list for the newsletter, that means you're not a patient, yet. Even if you feel you're in good shape, having a naturopathic check up once a year is a simple preventive for disease and a way to help keep your body running at peak performance. Call (519) 739-2402 to book an initial consultation and we'll make sure you get the February newsletter. Looking forward to helping you.

Fight or Flight... or Faint!

Picture this... I'm 17 years old sitting in the back seat of my friend's Ford Topaz heading to soccer practice. Large snowflakes are coming down and the ground is slick. (Remember when it used to snow in November?)

We are heading westbound approaching the Tecumseh Rd. and Ouellette Ave. intersection. The light turns yellow and we speed up trying to make the left hand turn.

Unfortunately for us, a transport truck heading eastbound on Tecumseh Rd. approaching Ouellette also speeds up trying to beat the light. All of a sudden I close my eyes waiting for the crash and...

I pass out! Didn't hear or feel a thing. Next thing I remember, I'm lying on the cold, wet road with 10 people staring down at me.

"Is this a dream?" I ask.

I try to get up but the entire right side of my body feels like - well - like I got hit by a Mack truck!

A few fractured ribs, a punctured lung, a bruised kidney and liver... I survived!

How did my body know what to do just before the collision? Well, we all have this automatic defense mechanism which is controlled by our adrenal glands.

I fainted because of the overload of stress. In the few seconds before impact, my body assessed the situation. I couldn't run away from the truck (flight) nor could I stay and deal with it (fight). So my next best option was to faint.

This is a true life-and-death example of how our adrenal glands work under a stressful situation. The problem is that we are constantly dealing with stressful events... but in our minds. The constant wear and tear on our adrenal glands leads to...

ADRENAL FATIGUE!!

This reflects the adrenals' inability to respond to stress. They simply don't secrete enough juice to keep you going!

Some of the common symptoms of adrenal fatigue are: feeling drained all the time no matter how much sleep you get, afternoon lows (especially between 3:00pm and 4:00pm), craving for salty foods, mild depression, thoughts more fuzzy, memory less accurate, more irritability...

One of the few good things about adrenal fatigue is that you can do most of what is necessary to recover and regain your adrenal health, yourself.

There are no magic pills for adrenal fatigue but there are certainly key lifestyle changes and nutritional supplements that will greatly improve your adrenal function.

Call (519) 739 - 2402 to book a "Boost My Adrenals" appointment.
